You, Me & ADHD: Why I Hate to Read Fiction
I read. I read all the time, but I read a lot of nonfiction. When a coworker asked me if I read fiction books, I told her I didn’t really like to read fiction books.
“I’m not really interested in reading books….” I told her.
“Well, what about audio books?” She proposed.
“Mm. Yea. I think that…
I just realized this about myself too!!!! I almost NEVER read entire novels. Like ever ever ever ever. The only exceptions have been super-interesting, fairly easy books like Harry Potter. And what I noticed is, it’s very difficult for me to read detailed things, chronologically, for long periods of time. And, looking back, I realize that, in school, I NEVER read books straight thru. I’d skip around until I found an interesting passage, read that, listen in class, and build my ideas/paper from there. It’s MUCH easier for me to read things out of order, skipping around from place to place. And you can’t really do that with stories. You have to read from beginning to end. And, unless it’s very very very interesting, I just can’t hold my attention that long.
I really noticed this when my counselor asked me to read a short fictional passage from a book. I had to use my iPod Touch as a place marker to be able to read each line. I had to reread several lines over. I never noticed this about me until then. Oh, and I’ve never read Harry Potter before, although I would’ve liked to. I also have no attention span to read it. (sad)
