Why I Hate to Read Fiction
I read. I read all the time, but I read a lot of nonfiction. When a coworker asked me if I read fiction books, I told her I didn’t really like to read fiction books.
“I’m not really interested in reading books….” I told her.
“Well, what about audio books?” She proposed.
“Mm. Yea. I think that wouldn’t be a thing for me either.” I usually like seeing what I read. I grew up watching TV with closed captions on. I also enjoy watching anime with subtitles on.
I only read books that really, really interest me. The last fiction book I read was Wicked. That was about 4 years ago. I’ve read other nonfiction books like, The Tipping Point, reference, or any ADHD related stuff. Information that I feel is a bit more practical.
But, it dawned on me that maybe…just maybe, my ADHD was the cause of me losing my books for all those literature classes I took in high school. The lower grades I’ve had in classes where I had to read fiction books when my writing is quite good. Why I was so defiant in class, getting a D, and needing to repeat that class.
My feelings are mixed about realizing why I might hate reading fiction, but at least there’s ways around it. Thank goodness for Kurzweill-like programs. I just hope I never have to be required to read fiction ever again.
